Bobby Long ATO Debut 'A Winter Tale' Confirmed for Feb. 1

As previously reported here, British singer-songwriter-guitarist Bobby Long will release his ATO Records debut, A Winter Tale February 1. The set was produced by Grammy-winner Liam Watson (White Stripes).
Long, 24, is currently living in New York City. Originally from rustic Wiltshire in South West England, he moved to London and became a regular at club open-mic nights while attending London Metropolitan University where he studied Music in Film and wrote his thesis on The Social Impact of American Folk Music. As he played London venues, he met actor and fellow musician Robert Pattinson, now of Twilight fame, of course, who would go on to sing “Let Me Sign”
(co-written by Long and friend Marcus Foster) for the soundtrack of the first Twilight film.
Long built up a loyal following through his live performances, which have included notable Los Angeles dates at the Hotel Cafe and this past summer, at the Troubadour (see this review at That Writer Guy). In 2009, Long played 160 shows in seven months in seven countries.
The upcoming album includes Nona Hendryx (LaBelle) on backing vocals on
"Penance Fire Blues," B. J. Cole (Elton John, Sting) on pedal steel, Icelandic singer Lay Low on several tracks, and other top players working with Long. And by way of continued extensive touring, He'll headline a U.S club tour January-April 2011, with dates to be announced.
Long will play a special benefit show in New York December 9 at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe in Soho. A free track, "Who You Been Loving," may be downloaded for now at his official website.

Duran Duran Releasing New Album, 'All You Need Is Now' Digitally in December

Duran Duran will release its 13th album, All You Need Is Now, as an iTunes digital exclusive December 21, followed by a physical release on CD and special packages (vinyl?) in February 2011 with additional tracks.
Duran Duran 2010 - Photo by Stephanie Pistel
The nine-track digital release was produced by Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Adele, Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen) and features four original members of Duran DuranJohn Taylor, Roger Taylor, Nick Rhodes and Simon Le Bon
The first single from the record is the title track “All You Need Is Now,” available worldwide on December 14 exclusively on the iTunes Store.
The album is said to be a return-to-roots.  According to the band, it was born out of a special show in 2008.
Duran Duran was headlining festivals in a number of countries, playing arenas in others, and then became the first group to perform at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Two nights later in the city of lights, the band offered its most loyal Duranies there a specially created “mega-mix” one-hour set that was filmed in a tiny theatre, with long-time-fan Ronson.  Feeling there was strong chemistry between the gorup and Ronson, he agreed to produce its next album and work began in late Spring of 2009, at Sphere Studios in London. Ronson calls  “imaginary follow up to Rio that never was.”
The album features guest vocals/rap from longtime Duran Duran friend/collaborator Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters, while Owen Pallett of Arcade Fire contributed  string arrangements. Up-and-coming British art star Clunie Reid will oversee the album artwork and packaging. Reid’s work has been recently shown at leading UK and US spaces, including the Saatchi Gallery, The Tate and the New Museum in New York. British fashion magazine POP’s creative team will provide art direction for the project.

Before launching a Spring 2011 world tour to promote the album, the group will head to South Africa December 7 for five dates, the first time in 17 years the band has played in Africa.
Since leading the "New British Invasion" of the 1980s, Duran Duran has sold more than 80 million records scored18 American hit singles, 30 chart-toppers at home in the U.K. and numerous hits around the world.

Graham Parker Releasing First Live DVD 'At the FTC' Dec. 7

British singer-songwriter (and longtime American resident) Graham Parker will release his live DVD Graham Parker & The Figgs: Live at The FTC December 7 on Primary Wave Records.
Graham Parker & the Figgs: Live at the FTC (DVD + Bonus CD)Cult faves The Figgs have long been Parkers's backup band.  The concert was recorded as  Parker celebrated his 20th album, Imaginary Television, released earlier this year on Bloodshot Records, and also dipped into his vast back catalog for numbers such as “Life Gets Better”, “Mercury Poisoning” and “My Love’s Strong”.
The performance was filmed in 5.1 on April 23, 2010 at Fairfield, Connecticut’s FTC Stageone.  The DVD also features a career-spanning interview with Parker, as well as a companion CD featuring the entire concert.
"Typically, when the film crew turns up for the one gig on the tour they are scheduled to film, something goes wrong and the band don't get a proper sound check.  The singer (me) is sick with the tour bug and has lost half his voice. A blizzard occurs and half the audience don't show.  Whatever: it's often less than ideal.  Not the case with this little, beauty, thankfully," Parker said. "The band rocked like Safari Park Chimps, the film crew were non-intrusive, I was in full, strong voice, and the weather did not conspire to keep the punters at home.  What a strange confluence of fortuitous events!   This one's a keeper."
Passion Is No Ordinary Word: The Graham Parker Anthology [2-CD SET]Parker, backed by the Rumour in the mid-1970s was part of the pub-rock scene out of London, though he was often cast as "New Wave" then alongside Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, though all three were clearly neither punk or new wave, but much more. His early classics include the albums Howlin' Wind (his debut) and Heat Treatment both in 1976 and Squeezing Out Sparks in 1979. Other career highlights include 1988's The Mona Lisa's Sister , 1991's Struck By Lightning Acid Bubblegum  in 1996 and 2001's Deepcut To Nowhere.  The Rhino retrospective Passion Is No Ordinary Word collects his work from the '70s through the early 90s.
Parker has been one of music's most consistent songwriters, his work encompassing areas of rock, R&B/Soul and country, too. Decades on his voice still bites when needed, yet has also taken on many other nuances, especially in the past two decades or so.
