Albert King - Stevie Ray Vaughan 'In Session' Blues Summit Coming to DVD/CD Nov. 9

A now-legendary musical meeting between bluesman Albert King and a young Stevie Ray Vaughan on In Session, the great lost television series of the '80s, will be released on DVD packaged with a CD in a deluxe set from Stax Novemer 9.
King was joined on December 6, 1983 by Vaughan on a Canadian sound stage for the recording, which has appeared previously in audio, but now sees its first DVD release.  The video portion includes three classic performances unavailable on the previously issued audio disc: “Born Under a Bad Sign,” the landmark title track from Albert King’s biggest Stax release written by William Bell and Booker T. Jones; Stevie Ray’s “Texas Flood,” the Larry Davis-penned title track of Vaughan’s landmark debut album; and “I’m Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town,” made famous by Louis Jordan and later, Ray Charles.
"It was evident from the first choruses that they were playing for each other," writes liner notes author/musicologist Samuel Charters, "And that was the best audience either of them could ever have. The music never lost its intensity, its quality of something very important being handed back and forth and there was time for Stevie and Albert to see where their ideas took them.”
While both King and Vaughan would perform with other musicians in the years that followed, they never played together again.Vaughan, 31 years King’s junior, died in a helicopter crash in the fog on the way back from a concert in 1990. King outlived him by two years, dying of a heart attack in 1992.  That makes this fine release all the more historic and welcome in it's full form on DVD and CD.

Britain's Bobby Long Signs to Dave Matthews' ATO Records

British singer-songwriter-guitarist Bobby Long has signed to New York-based independent label ATO Records, co-owned and founded by David Matthews.
Long's debut A Winter Tale is set for release February 1, 2011.
The album will feature 11 original songs drawing upon American folk, blues and country produced by Liam Watson - a Grammy-winner for his engineering work on Elephant by The White Stripes - at his analog Toe Rag Studios in London. Since he began performing in North America in April, 2009, Long has played more than 150 shows (including a number of sold-out appearances in major U.S. and Canadian cities, along with European dates).  His distinctive vocals and finger-pick acoustic guitar playing, along with storytelling skills, have won him news fans with each performance.
Buzzine said,"The influences were obvious at times, but they’re good ones, like Dylan and Neil Young. Can’t go wrong there. His way with wordplay and imagery also recalled Conor Oberst a few years back. But unlike Oberst’s early work, Long has already found a fine singing voice to match that imagery. Plus, he’s also an impressive guitarist as a picker."
On the upcoming album, Long is backed by various studio players on slide guitar, piano, standup bass, drums and keyboards. The songs include  the guitar-driven "The Bounty of Mary Jane," the haunting imagery of "Being a Mockingbird," the anthemic "Dead and Done" ("I've already had the neighbors here, Johnny Cash came 'round and we split a beer" ") and the defiant "Penance Fire Blues" contrasted by the sparse and plaintive "Who Have You Been Loving," which is already quite a fan favorite and appeared in a simpler acoustic form on Long's homemade self-released recording, Dirty Pond Songs, only available at his shows. Among the other tracks on the album are "In the Frost,"  "A Passing Tale" and "Sick Man Blues,"  "Two Years Old," he title cut, "A Winter Tale," and rhe closing "A Stranger Song," inspired greatly by one of Long's musical heroes, Leonard Cohen.
Long, 24, moved to London from Wiltshire in the southwest of England to attend college, and became part of the burgeoning open mic circuit to expose his music. He met actor and fellow musician Robert Pattinson, who would go on to sing "Let Me Sign" (co-written by Long and friend Marcus Foster) for the soundtrack to the film Twilight. The inclusion of the song in the film's soundtrack and CD opened doors for Long, who followed through with heartfelt shows to earn his own legion of devoted fans.  Long's "Left To Die" from Dirty Pond Songs reached #1 on the iTunes "Unsigned" chart and #8 on the Folk chart.
That Writer Guy covered a recent Long show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles and wrote, "No false encores were needed. He'd made his statement and without a doubt won new fans. For an indie artist, with little if any airplay at all, it was remarkable how many in the crowd sang along to many of the songs. These fans are devoted already and the flock is growing. Long is one of several British singer-songwriters on the rise, including his friend Marcus Foster and another pal who's kind of become well-known in film, a guy by the name of Rob Pattinson. But while that Twilight connection may send some to check out Long's music, his songs and earnest performances stand on their own."
Long and his band return to North America this fall, supporting Michael Franti  A limited edition 10" vinyl EP containing songs from forthcoming record (including two bonus tracks) will be available at the shows.

Bowie, Iggy, Lou - 'Sacred Triangle' Coming on DVD Nov. 23

Focusing on a trio of artists who shook up rock music in the early '70s, The Sacred Triangle: Bowie, Iggy & Lou 1971-1973 will be released on on DVD November 23.
Sacred Triangle: Bowie, Iggy & Lou 1971- 1973
By the latter part of 1971 David Bowie was considered a one-hit-wonder, Lou Reed was thought done after a solo debut that went nowhere after his years with the Velvet Underground, and Iggy Pop was looked at as the drug-addled former frontman of The Stooges. But a gathering a New York's Max's Kansas City changed everything, especially the career paths of all three.
Sacred Triangle looks at how Bowie, Iggy and Lou all worked together on various projects.  The film tells the story with interviews, rare and classic film footage, plus recently discovered archive material, seldom seen photographs along with other features on the DVD as well. The film includes contributions from Bowie''s ex-wife Angie Bowie; Andy Warhol's Factory assistant Billy Name; MainMan Management vice president, Leee Black Childers; New York scenester Jayne [née Wayne] County and many others from an era now lost to rock'n'roll time.

Ray Charles 'Undiscovered Masters' Coming Oct. 26 from Concord

Concord Records will release a Ray Charles collection, Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters October 26, featuring previously unheard recordings, including a duet with Johnny Cash.
Rare Genius: The Undiscovered MastersThe album draws from some four decades of demos and other vault material, ten numbers spanning genres of R&B/soul, pop, country and gospel as Charles so often did. The opener, "Love’s Gonna Bite You Back." dates back 20 years to a March 1980 session followed by the ballad "It Hurts to Be in Love."  It's heated gospel duet for Charles and Cash on Kris Kristofferson’s "Why Me, Lord?" found in the Sony vaults, recorded by legendary produce Billy Sherrill in Nashville in 1981.
Other tracks on the album include the soul-grounded "I Don’t Want No One But You," a bluesy cover of Hank Cochran’s country classic "A Little Bitty Tear" and a joyful Charles promising "I’m Gonna Keep on Singin'."  The trio of tunes were found in the vault at Charles’ R.P.M. International studios in Los Angeles. Some of the sparse recordings were fleshed out by an all-star array of players that include guitarists Keb' Mo' and George Doering, organist Bobby Sparks, trumpeter Gray Grant, trombonist Alan Kaplan, bassists Trey Henry and Chuck Berghofer, drummers Gregg Field and Ray Brinker and background vocalist Eric Benet.
Ray Charles would have turned 80 years old on September 23. His music lives on, even more so with this upcoming collection.

Remy Zero Reuniting For Concerts in Memory of Late Drummer

Los Angeles band Remy Zero is reuniting to play four special date in October to honor the memory of the band’s drummer Gregory Slay, who passed away on New Year’s Day of complications from Cystic Fibrosis.
Golden Hum (Mcup)On May 22, 2010 the remaining members of Remy Zero played first show together in eight years as a tribute to Slay in New Orleans, the town where he was born. At the urging of fans, the band decided to play several more shows and at the upcoming dates will perform a new or unreleased song. Proceeds from the shows and recordings will go to benefit the Honeymoon Trust set up for Slay's wife, Tiana Krahn-Slay and their daughter, Honeymoon Slay.
"The act of performing was very important to Gregory. It is the way we will always communicate with each other," said guitarist Jeffrey Cain. "Anytime we play those songs, he's in the room.”
Remy Zero will play Dante's in Portland October 7; Crocodile Cafe in Seattle October 8,
Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco October 11; and Spaceland in Los Angeles October 12.
These were also the last cities that Slay toured when he played drums with O+S in 2009. In addition to the music, the upcoming dates will also feature an edited version of a film by Nina Parikh, shown at the original memorial. A lifelong friend of Remy Zero, Parikh had been documenting the band on film throughout its career.
Remy ZeroRemy Zero formed in Birmingham, Alabama in 1989 with members Cinjun Tate (vocals/guitar), Shelby Tate (guitar, keyboards and vocals), Cedric LeMoyne (bass guitar), Jeffrey Cain (lead guitar) and Gregory Slay (drums, percussion). The group was given a boost by Radiohead, impressed with a demo and then inviting the band to open Radiohead's U.S. tour for The Bends. Next, Remy Zero moved to L.A. and recorded it's self-titled debut album, followed by The Golden Hum and Villa Elaine.
The band's song “Save Me” became the theme song for the WB TV show Smallville, about the pre-Superman Clark Kent and ten seasons later, is still the theme and one of the most fitting for any show on television. It made Remy Zero a national band and the group is also now part of comic book lore, too.
Villa ElaineWhen Remy Zero split up, Cinjun Tate and Shelby Tate released an album as the band Spartan Fidelity. Shelby Tate currently lives in Cambodia building the music studio Onsa while Cinjun is currently in the band A.C.T. and working on a new project called the New York Cosmos. He is also recording a solo album while Cedric LeMoyne created O+S with Orenda Fink from Azure Ray, records and tours with Alanis Morissette and Gnarls Barkley, and is currently working on an album with Barrett Martin of the Screaming Trees. Jeffrey Cain has been recording with artists such as Tricky, Afrobots, O+S, and Isidore (a band he formed with Steve Kilbey of The Church). Cain also has a new Dead Snares CD due this fall on popantipop that features both Gregory and Cedric playing on on tracks . In addition, Cain, Slay and LeMoyne received an Emmy nomination for the FX TV series Nip/Tuck theme song, written as The Engine Room.
Slay’s musical legacy, in addition to Remy Zero, include his projects Sleepwell and Horsethief Beats with Jeffrey Cain, along with contributions to O+S and Dead Snares and more. Just prior to his death, he'd finished a solo album, The Sound Will Find You, which will officially be released at the same time as the memorial tour dates and is already available for streaming on bandcamp.com. Proceeds from his album will go to benefit his family through The Honeymoon Trust.
