Los Angeles band Remy Zero is reuniting to play four special date in October to honor the memory of the band’s drummer Gregory Slay, who passed away on New Year’s Day of complications from Cystic Fibrosis.
On May 22, 2010 the remaining members of Remy Zero played first show together in eight years as a tribute to Slay in New Orleans, the town where he was born. At the urging of fans, the band decided to play several more shows and at the upcoming dates will perform a new or unreleased song. Proceeds from the shows and recordings will go to benefit the Honeymoon Trust set up for Slay's wife, Tiana Krahn-Slay and their daughter, Honeymoon Slay.
"The act of performing was very important to Gregory. It is the way we will always communicate with each other," said guitarist Jeffrey Cain. "Anytime we play those songs, he's in the room.”
Remy Zero will play Dante's in Portland October 7; Crocodile Cafe in Seattle October 8,
Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco October 11; and Spaceland in Los Angeles October 12.
These were also the last cities that Slay toured when he played drums with O+S in 2009. In addition to the music, the upcoming dates will also feature an edited version of a film by Nina Parikh, shown at the original memorial. A lifelong friend of Remy Zero, Parikh had been documenting the band on film throughout its career.
Remy Zero formed in Birmingham, Alabama in 1989 with members Cinjun Tate (vocals/guitar), Shelby Tate (guitar, keyboards and vocals), Cedric LeMoyne (bass guitar), Jeffrey Cain (lead guitar) and Gregory Slay (drums, percussion). The group was given a boost by Radiohead, impressed with a demo and then inviting the band to open Radiohead's U.S. tour for The Bends. Next, Remy Zero moved to L.A. and recorded it's self-titled debut album, followed by The Golden Hum and Villa Elaine.
The band's song “Save Me” became the theme song for the WB TV show Smallville, about the pre-Superman Clark Kent and ten seasons later, is still the theme and one of the most fitting for any show on television. It made Remy Zero a national band and the group is also now part of comic book lore, too.
When Remy Zero split up, Cinjun Tate and Shelby Tate released an album as the band Spartan Fidelity. Shelby Tate currently lives in Cambodia building the music studio Onsa while Cinjun is currently in the band A.C.T. and working on a new project called the New York Cosmos. He is also recording a solo album while Cedric LeMoyne created O+S with Orenda Fink from Azure Ray, records and tours with Alanis Morissette and Gnarls Barkley, and is currently working on an album with Barrett Martin of the Screaming Trees. Jeffrey Cain has been recording with artists such as Tricky, Afrobots, O+S, and Isidore (a band he formed with Steve Kilbey of The Church). Cain also has a new Dead Snares CD due this fall on popantipop that features both Gregory and Cedric playing on on tracks . In addition, Cain, Slay and LeMoyne received an Emmy nomination for the FX TV series Nip/Tuck theme song, written as The Engine Room.
Slay’s musical legacy, in addition to Remy Zero, include his projects Sleepwell and Horsethief Beats with Jeffrey Cain, along with contributions to O+S and Dead Snares and more. Just prior to his death, he'd finished a solo album, The Sound Will Find You, which will officially be released at the same time as the memorial tour dates and is already available for streaming on bandcamp.com. Proceeds from his album will go to benefit his family through The Honeymoon Trust.
