Pixies Play 33 Songs for 33 Rescued Chilean Miners

Wednesday evening, October 13, the Pixies played their first-ever headline show in Chile at the Teatro La Cupula in Santiago as 33 miners were rescued after a staggering 69 days trapped 2000 feet underground.  Like the rest of the world, the band was touched deeply by the event and chose to play a 33-song set, one for each miner finally returned to the surface.
Wave of Mutilation: Best of Pixies"We were so moved by this story, by how many lives had been affected by this, and how the Chilean people banded together to support what can only be described as a miracle," said Pixies' Black Francis, "We wanted to do something to show how affected we were by this, so we played a special set at tonight's show, 33 songs for the 33 miners, the longest set we've ever played as a band. We found out five minutes before we went on stage that all of the miners had safely reached the surface.  This was definitely one of the most meaningful show we've ever played."
Introducing the set, Black Francis said that while he didn't speak much Spanish, the band understood what a special day it was in Chile,  a time for real celebration.  A short video clip of that introduction can be found here.

  1. This is incredible. I can only imagine what it was like. Rock is at best in transcendent moments like this.
